What is Science Cafe?

For over four years, Science Cafe has been the only place in South Carolina where for the price of a cup of coffee, a quality craft beer, or a smooth glass of wine, anyone can come to explore the latest trends in science and technology.

We're a family that believes passionately that science embodies the power of ideas. We believe science changes attitudes, lives, and ultimately the world. For over four years, we've built a community of individuals dedicated to discussing those issues in an open forum with some of the world's best experts. It’s free knowledge and inspiration from inspired thinkers and leaders.

We want curious souls to engage their ideas and each other. Science Café is a forum for debating science issues where we dive deep into the research, the philosophies and ethics, and the applications of cutting-edge research. This is not a windowshop for science. This is not an academic forum. These are not white papers or dry, academic panels. This is real discussion about real issues with real people.

We are committed to promoting public engagement with science, to learning and understanding our world around us, and to making science accountable to solving the world's needs for energy, the environment, public health, technology, engineering, and more. We want you to join our family of engaged, active, and intellectually thirsty members. 

The Code

We love having friends from the community join our Science Cafe family. So if you've never been before, here's what you need to know before attending: 

1. Our experts are here to talk with you. You can interrupt and ask questions at any time. We promise, if you're thinking it, someone else is to. So step up and ask it!
2. We love opinions and open discussion. Think our speaker is creating a life-saving technology? Let him know! Do you think someone has a better theory? Challenge our speaker. We want intellectual discussion that deepens your understanding of the topic and our speaker's work. Who knows? Maybe you'll teach our guest something they didn't know!
3. There are no dumb questions. Remember when your elementary school teachers said that? How liberating was it to know that no one would judge? Guess what. We don't judge either. We know you probably aren't an expert. You're probably just a smart guy or gal with some really great ideas and a thirst for knowledge (and a good beer).  So ask away. We don't bite.
4. Eat, drink, and be merry. We don't do formal lectures. We don't do hierarchy. At our place, you, our guest speaker, and the EngenuitySC staff are equals. Come enjoy a beer, order a snack, snag a seat on the couch, and enjoy good times with good friends, great drinks, and some deep discussion.
